Dead Justice
Sneak Peek
One
Silence was easily obtained.
As the girl opened her mouth to scream, he pulled the blade from her stomach and flipped it over, facing the blade outward and away from his hand. He curled his fingers around the hilt, then moved his hand forward in a short arc, angling the blade so that it sliced across her throat.
What would have been a final cry for help escaped from the opening in her throat as nothing more than a soft, low whistle. He watched the look of terror on her face give way to an expression of sudden shock. But really, it was something more than that. It was an understanding; a realization that all efforts of resistance, any attempts at survival that had been intended in that final scream were fruitless. Any further actions were useless. It was a look he had seen before and it always played out the same.
She backed away and he thought he detected a look of sadness in her eyes as her legs gave out, leaning her back against the wall. He watched as she slid to the floor, arterial blood spraying a gory mist across the wall as her body sagged.
Something stirred within him as he saw her now. During her descent, the fabric of her nightgown got caught in a way that when she came to rest on the floor, her bottom half was left exposed, leaving her naked with the lacy frills gathered up above her waist.
He shook his head to clear his thoughts. This wasnât about sex and even less about the girlâs age. She was likely only a few months into her first year of high school. Still, he didnât feel any guilt, and that was good. In the times before, there had been a great deal of guilt. To see her now, on the ground and no longer moving, felt somewhat strange without it.
He checked his watch. Seventy-two seconds. He had given himself more time than that, but he worried now that if he remained in the room, he would keep glancing down below her nightgown.
He was ahead of schedule as he crossed the room and slipped through the door, gently closing it behind him. It was very late, well after midnight. This likely meant that the other targets were in the bedroom upstairs. Still, it was better to be certain that no one was on the first floor. If he moved on upstairs, any of the remaining targets could escape should they be alerted by any sounds.
He looked at his watch again. Ninety-seven seconds. He was still ahead of schedule and felt a sick urge to have another look at the girl. He sighed and went back into the room. He crossed over to the girl and stared at her for a moment. She was young. Only faint wisps of hair had grown in between her legs. He reached for her nightgown and pulled it down in a strange act of decency.
